Bringing a new pet home is an amazing feeling! But among all the toys, bedding, and food, there is one critical step you cannot skip: scheduling their first round of vaccines.
Whether you adopted a tiny puppy or an older rescue animal, vaccines are the absolute best way to shield their immune system from dangerous, life-threatening illnesses.
The Standard Vaccination Timeline
Young animals require a timed series of shots to build up proper immunity. If you adopted a young puppy or kitten, expect to follow this basic schedule:
- 6 to 8 Weeks Old: This is when they receive their very first core shots. For puppies, this is the DHPP combo (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza). For kittens, it is the FVRCP combo (feline distemper and upper respiratory viruses).
- 10 to 12 Weeks Old: They will need their second round of booster shots to keep their immunity strong. Your vet might also suggest lifestyle vaccines like Bordetella (for kennel cough) or Feline Leukemia (FeLV).
- 14 to 16 Weeks Old: The final round of core boosters, along with the Rabies vaccine, which is required by law in most areas.
What If You Adopted an Adult Pet?
If you adopted an adult dog or cat with no medical history, don’t worry! Your veterinarian will simply administer a single round of core vaccines immediately, followed by a booster a few weeks later to instantly catch them up and keep them safe.
